  • Gabon – “a major step with decriminalisation of same-sex relationships”

On Monday 29th June, the Senate adopted new legislation by decriminalising same-sex relations by a large majority of 59 votes - Jessya Ella Ekogha, a spokesperson for Gabon’s Presidency announced.

Gabon now joins the increasing number of countries in south Saharan Africa to include Seychelles, Angola, Mozambique and Botswana.

The Bill was then ratified by the President Ali Bongo on July 7th and notably Bongo’s wife, Sylvia supported the legislation, arguing it was a fundamental human right to love freely.

The Prime Minister Julien Nkoghe Bekale who initiated the Bill was delighted at the shift and change in mentalities that have driven parliamentarians to change the law.
