The TIDE inclusion roadmap illustrates the different stages of the inclusion journey.

The journey begins with gaining a sense of awareness and proceeds to embedding – and ultimately sustaining – an inclusive workplace culture.

About TIDE

Talent Inclusion and Diversity Evaluation (TIDE) is the diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) self-assessment evaluation and benchmarking tool developed by the Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion (enei).

TIDE empowers enei members to identify where they are on their inclusion journey. Having a solid understanding of an organisation’s progress in implementing and sustaining an inclusive culture is key to identifying strengths as well as areas for improvement.

About each stage

Guidance for each stage is explained below.

Discovery

At this stage, it is anticipated that you will be gathering information and data to help you understand your organisation’s current DEI maturity level. You will be taking into account the internal and external environment that you operate in and identifying relevant issues and challenges.

The discovery stage might include assessing or reviewing the organisation’s current policies, strategies, and working practices. And you will be consulting with employees, senior stakeholders, and subject matter experts to gain deeper insights into the DEI impacts and opportunities.

Strategy

In this stage, you will be taking the learnings about your organisation and the environment you are operating in from the discovery stage and applying them to develop your DEI strategy, statement, policy, or plan. To maximise effectiveness, this should be a collaborative effort involving key stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.

At this stage, you will identify your organisational values and vision for an inclusive workplace culture. This will guide you in developing your aims, objectives, and the measurable outcomes needed to achieve this vision.

Implement

At this stage, you are putting your strategy and plan into action. This will involve identifying and assigning DEI responsibilities and securing resources and ongoing senior stakeholder commitment. This might include launching DEI initiatives, developing or revising policies, providing training and development to all your employees, and establishing ongoing employee engagement on DEI matters. You will be building a framework to successfully deliver your DEI strategy or plan and facilitate a more inclusive working environment for all.

Embed

You will now be integrating your DEI strategy, plan, and approach into your day-to-day working practices. This will include incorporating DEI across the various stages of the employee life cycle, from recruitment and onboarding to talent development and progression, as well as fostering wellbeing and a sense of belonging for all employees.

Your senior leaders will be DEI champions and allies, role modelling inclusive language and behaviours. You will be monitoring and reporting on your progress and measures of success and taking proactive steps to address those areas where you have been less successful or are experiencing any barriers to inclusion.

Sustain

At this stage, you will be focusing on maintaining your inclusive workplace culture and continuously improving your DEI efforts. You will be regularly assessing and evaluating the progress and impact of your DEI commitments and using learnings to drive data-informed decision making. You will have put in place measures to ensure a psychologically safe and inclusive workplace culture where all employees can bring their authentic selves to work and are supported with their individual needs.
