It is estimated that 1% of the UK workforce may experience some degree of gender variance and that at some stage 0.2% may undergo transition. Therefore, gender reassignment or transgender issues have significant implications for employers.
Gender reassignment or transgender are umbrella terms to describe people whose appearance, characteristics or behaviours differ from socially accepted stereotypes about how men and women are expected to be. They describe a group of people who have experience of feeling gender different in some way.
Transgender people can be a valuable asset to your organisation; in addition to the moral and legal drivers to treat all employees as individuals, transgender people can be resilient, creative and strong with good communication and negotiation skills, as a result of the challenges they have faced in life.
