Best Practice on Managing Pregnancy, Maternity, and Return to Work

Pregnancy and Maternity is a Protected Characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.  This gives a woman special protection at work. enei is running a series of events to focus on issues which particularly affect women at work, starting with this Roundtable which features keynote speakers from the EHRC, Women and Equalities Commission and Nationwide.

This Roundtable provides employers with an opportunity to:

  • Present, share and uncover best practice on pregnancy, maternity and return to work activities. 
  • How do managers and colleagues react when one of the team announces their pregnancy?
  • Issues such as managing to cover the woman’s work, paying for cover, giving the correct pay and benefits, keeping in touch and then easing someone back into the workplace.
  • Discuss all the issues surrounding this topic.

Keynote speakers:

Sue Coe - EHRC - Programme Head: Economy & Employment

Luanne Middleton - Women & Equalities Committee, Second Clerk 

Julie McCarthy - Nationwide - Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Manager

The speakers will present the in-depth work they have undertaken on this issue.  The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) will present findings from its research on Pregnancy and Maternity Discrimination and its Working Forwards campaign.  The Women and Equalities Commission (WEC) will discuss their work as a result of the EHRC’s research.  The WEC has recommended that the Government publish a “strong, specific communications plan” for the awareness raising and attitude changing work it has agreed to undertake. Nationwide will be presenting the findings of their research and outline the recommendations it will be making to its Board.

Participants will have space to raise their own issues, explore best practice with experts and each other and leave ready to influence their organisation’s approach to pregnancy and maternity.

This event will be followed by a networking lunch from 12:00 - 13:00.
